Afi presents the 9th edition of the Guide to the Spanish Financial System

• This edition incorporates the institutional, regulatory and market functioning developments which have taken place in the last five years since their previous edition, and in which the crisis of COVID-19, the war in Ukraine, the emergence of an inflationary process and geopolitical instability have acted as a context.
• The Guide has been prepared by Afi professionals specialists in all the subjects covered.
• The book, which is a reference text in universities, postgraduate centers and among professionals in the economy and finance, is sponsored by AEB and CECA. It includes, in this edition, an additional chapter specifically dedicated to the field of sustainable finance.
Today, Afi presented the 9th edition of the Guide to the Spanish Financial System, which is sponsored by AEB and CECA. The conference, which took place at Afi Global Education, was attended by Ángel Berges, vice-president of Afi and author of the Guide; Daniel Manzano, partner of Afi and director of the Guide; Soledad Núñez, deputy governor of the Bank of Spain; Alejandra Kindelán, president of the AEB, and José María Méndez, director general of CECA.
This new edition celebrates thirty years since its first publication in 1994 also coinciding with the launch of Afi Global Education, Afi's training company. The main objective, since its inception, has been to reflect the transformations of the Spanish financial system and its institutions, with special attention to the evolution of the international environment and, in particular, to greater European integration. As on previous occasions, a large group of Afi professionals have participated in its preparation, specialists, each of them in the different subjects being addressed.
This 9th edition places special emphasis on changes induced by the most recent circumstances. The COVID-19 crisis combined with the subsequent war in Ukraine and the emergence of serious inflationary tensions, which radically modified the monetary policy that was being implemented, have altered the context in which markets and the financial system as a whole have developed. But to this, there are also some important revisions to regulation and supervision, the development or consolidation of new markets, or the relevance of the impact of technology and sustainability for the financial system itself. All these new features are addressed in this edition, including a additional chapter dedicated specifically to sustainability.
A Guide in tune with global changes, as you have highlighted. Daniel Manzano de Afi: “Since its public appearance during the celebration in Spain of the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank 30 years ago, the Guide has accompanied and reflected the profound transformation of the Spanish financial system, of which Afi has been a witness and qualified protagonist. We renew our commitment to keeping alive a work that has become a reference text in universities and postgraduate centers, as well as an instrument for consultation and support for professionals in the sector.”
For its part, Soledad Núñez, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Spain, said that “Spanish banks are in a solid position, but they must take advantage of this circumstance to adapt to the challenges posed by the digital environment and also to accompany the business fabric in the transformation of the economy towards sustainable models”.
A strength that has also stood out Alejandra Kindelán: “Banking is an essential vector of Spanish economic growth. Profitable banks are the best guarantee for economic momentum and social progress. We are fortunate to have a strong, sensitive and responsible bank.”
“This guide reflects the evolution of the Spanish financial sector, of which we can be very proud: proud of the strength of its entities to continue to finance the economy and support social welfare; proud of their talent to face challenges such as digitalization and sustainability; and, in addition, because we have our own financial sector, where our entities are domiciled in Spain, unlike what happens in other European countries,” he said Jose Maria Mendez.
