The Iberian Trio: an opportunity for tourism development in inland Spain
The report ”The Iberian Trio: an opportunity for tourism development in inland Spain”, prepared by Afi for Airbnb, analyzes the potential impact of the total solar eclipses of 2026, 2027 and 2028 on tourism in rural Spain.
The study identifies these astronomical phenomena as an exceptional opportunity to energize inland Spain, with the capacity to attract more than one million additional travelers, channeled through short-term accommodation, and generate a significant economic impact in terms of employment, local activity and diversification of the tourism model.
The main findings include:
- An estimated impact of 421 million euros of Gross Value Added associated with the eclipse of 2026.
- The creation of 7,300 jobs equivalent to full time.
- An increase of up to thrice in the reservations of short term accommodation in municipalities located within the totality band.
- A significant weight of international tourism, which represents approximately 78% of demand expected.
The analysis also highlights the key role of providing flexible accommodation as a lever for rural territories to capitalize on these extraordinary tourist flows, contributing to greater territorial cohesion and economic diversification.
